USAID's Sahel Regional Environmental Compliance Workshop

Dakar, Senegal ▪ 4-8 June 2018

Objective:

The principal goal of the workshop was to strengthen Environmental Compliance and Environmentally Sound Design and Management (ESDM) of USAID-funded activities throughout the Sahel Region by assuring that participants have the motivation, knowledge, and skills necessary to achieve environmental compliance and improve project sustainability. To achieve this goal, the workshop aimed to accomplish the following specific objectives:

  1. Increase skills and capacity of USAID professionals to incorporate environmentally sound design, management and best practice into all USAID-supported projects.
  2. Strengthen the knowledge of participants on environmental compliance requirements set forth by 22 CFR 216 (Reg. 216), ADS 204, and ADS 201mal, including documentation and the implementation of environmental procedures and climate change throughout the life-of-project.
  3. Facilitate collaboration between USAID staff across the Region by promoting networking, exchange of ideas, lessons learned and tested technical solutions.

Summary of Key Activities:

    Day 1 Overview of ESDM principles, USAID environmental compliance regulations and procedures and skill-building for Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) development.

    Day 2 Explain and practice USAID environmental compliance procedures and discuss environmental mitigation and monitoring for project activities. Prepare for field visits.

    Day 3 Explain USAID Climate Risk Management (CRM) procedures and prepare for and complete a field visit exercise identifying baseline state, environmental impact identification, and drafting of an IEE.

    Day 4 Complete field visit exercise to review climate change risks and draft a CRM screening.

    Day 5 Synthesize workshop proceedings and consider professional and organizational next steps.
