Sectoral Environmental Best Practices

This section of the GEMS website provides access to sector-specific environmental guidance to support activity design, pre-implementation environmental review (including identification of potential impacts and design of mitigation and monitoring measures), and development of environmental mitigation and monitoring plans (EMMPs).

Sectoral Environmental Guidelines
GEMS is in the process of synthesizing USAID’s Africa, Asia and Latin America sectoral environmental guidelines into consolidated “global” guidelines. Available sector documents are posted on the Sectoral Environmental Guidelines page.

Visual Field Guides
Visual field guides are intended to support field monitoring of select activities by development professionals, including those who are not environmental specialists. They are photo-based, simple yes-no checklists that identify the most common, significant environmental design and management problems in a set of typical sectoral activities.

Sector Bibliographies/Resources
Selected, frequently used/requested sector environmental resources, both USAID and third-party.
GEMS is now in the process of compiling this resource library. For now, please access http://www.encapafrica.org/docs.htm#sec_spec
